Rising Through the Ranks: Sam's Journey in the Scaffolding Industry

What is your background in the Scaffolding Industry?

My background is working within the construction industry starting out as a young 18 year old labourer and naturally progressing through the ranks to become an accomplished advanced scaffolder / inspector & site supervisor. I have been in this industry for a total of 26 years.
 
I have worked for many well known companies throughout the years and I have been heavily involved in the safe access in different sectors such as, private & commercial developments, aggregate manufacture, infrastructure & oil and gas.

What motivated you to enrol on your course at SIMIAN?

I was motivated to enrol on the CPD course at SIMIAN, specifically focusing on enhancing my knowledge on the new and updated industry standard changes within the current scaffolding safety & technical guidance which have been recently released.
 
I also wanted to enhance my understanding of scaffold inspection techniques, regulations, and best practices which reflect these new industry changes.

Did your employer encourage your attendance at this training, or was it a personal initiative?

In this case, attending the CPD Course at SIMIAN was both a personal initiative and supported by my employer. I recognised the value of investing in my professional development and approached my employer with the proposal. They acknowledged the significance of the training and agreed to my attendance which shows their commitment to me and the ongoing evolution of the organisation.

How has SIMIAN helped you to progress?

SIMIAN played a vital role in helping me progress in the CPD course with the new updated legislation within the industry and to further enhance my ability to undergo my advanced scaffold inspection training. They provided comprehensive and up-to-date training materials, delivered by a knowledgeable and experienced instructor who is an expert in their field.

These included in-depth knowledge of scaffold inspection techniques, understanding relevant regulations and standards, identifying potential hazards, and implementing appropriate safety measures. Additionally, I gained practical skills in assessing scaffold structures, conducting thorough inspections, and accurately documenting findings. Upon completion of the course, I achieved a qualification in advanced scaffold inspection, which has further enhanced my professional credentials and positioned me as a competent and knowledgeable professional in the construction industry.

How do you envision applying the knowledge and skills gained from this course in your current or future work?

The knowledge and skills gained from this course will greatly benefit me in my current and future work. For example, I plan to apply the problem-solving techniques and critical thinking skills I’ve learned to analyse complex issues and come up with innovative solutions. Additionally, the communication and collaboration skills I’ve acquired will enable me to work effectively in teams and effectively convey ideas to colleagues and clients. Overall, I believe that the skills gained from this course will enhance my performance and contribute to my professional growth.

What are you doing now with your new skills?

I will be using the knowledge and skills acquired from this course to improve a broader knowledge and understanding of the new and improved safety, training and inspection regulations.
 
I have transitioned over the past 4 years from advanced scaffolder / supervisor to a SHEQ Manager that leads and implements positive change within my current organisation that operates across the UK but in particular the Greater Manchester areas. I am also applying the knowledge and skills to address challenges and find efficient solutions. Additionally, I am utilising the communication and collaboration skills to effectively work with my colleagues and achieve common goals & company objectives. My experience with SIMIAN has been a positive one. The course has equipped me with invaluable skills and knowledge that will significantly enhance my performance in the workplace. The practical approach and interactive learning methods have made the learning process engaging and enjoyable. The most valuable takeaways I have gained from the SIMIAN training course so far are the practical skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to my work. The course has provided me with a solid foundation, knowledge and understanding of the new industry updates in legislation and specifically the current regulations and best practices.
These skills have not only improved my professional capabilities but have also increased my confidence in ensuring these updates can be transferable across our organisation.
