Name: Dave Randles

Job title: Safety Director/Principal Consultant

Talk me through a typical day in the office/work for you?

Arrive in the office around 8, wait for someone else to arrive so I get a drink made. (!) I check emails and respond to them throughout the day and field telephone calls from retained clients seeking advice. I may be working on a project, for example developing a management system for a client, accident investigation, writing a specification, visiting clients or helping out with scaffold inspections during busy periods. All in all, it’s a very diverse job and no two days are ever the same.

What is your favourite part of the job?

The variety. The job is very rarely boring and it’s actually very rewarding seeing improvements we have recommended being implemented and bearing fruit for our clients, whether that be in the way health & safety is managed or scaffold quality.

If you didn’t work at Simian what would be your dream job?

Professional touring golfer or caddy for a touring pro.

When you aren’t in work where are most likely to be found?

My work isn’t confined to the office or on site and normally extends beyond 9-5 at the kitchen table! Any spare time I can grab is spent with my family or on the golf course.

Where would your ideal holiday be and why?

On a Spanish/Portuguese/American villa complex with my family and a gang of pals and their families because I get the best of everything – family time, golf time, sunshine & banter!

Now for the quick fire round…

Tea or coffee? Tea in the morning, coffee after lunch.

Crisps or chocolate? Crisps. (For the record, salt and vinegar Discos!)

Beer or wine? Beer.

Celebrity look-alike? I say George Clooney, but I have been ‘accused’ of looking like Daniel Peacock) comic strip actor and Sam Allardyce (I’m not having that one!!!!).

A weekend in the country or a city break? A week in the country.

Rugby or football? Both, but I watch more football and am involved in coaching my son’s Rugby team. I am an Everton fan and as the saying goes, “We are born not manufactured. We do not choose, we are chosen. Those who understand need no explanation. Those who don’t … don’t matter”.

Early morning or late nights? Easy one! Late nights! (Probably my reason for disliking early mornings!)

Pub or wine bar? Pub
