London Build’s Women in Construction Event

22nd November 2021

Another huge congratulations to our London based BDM, Sara Calvo who has become an ambassador for women in the construction industry.

On Thursday 18 November 2021, Sara went along to London Build’s award-winning construction event at the London Olympia. Where she met up with our new friends at QFS Scaffolding, who invited her to climb their display tower which was built by women!! Sadly, Sara had to decline as she doesn’t have the head for heights.

Sara also got the chance to attend the Women in Construction networking event, who work in partnership with NAWIC. It is free to attend for all those that attend London Build and is a great opportunity to learn from industry leaders as they celebrate the successes and discuss challenges facing women in the industry.

Women in the construction industry

Throughout the event, Sara got the opportunity to speak to several university students about their journey into construction, and where they see themselves in the future. Speaking of the event, Sara said: “Many of these students commented that had they known about the apprenticeship, route they would have opted for this instead of university. The UK construction industry is in the middle of a skills shortage, and there are simply not enough qualified people available for the number of vacant jobs out there. This is great news for those looking for a career with longevity and opportunities to upskill.”

There are many routes into construction available for both men and women, including university, apprenticeships, labouring and putting yourself out there by networking with people who are currently working in the industry.
