How is VR Transforming the Construction Industry?

21st October 2022

Technology is continually transforming the ways that industries worldwide operate on a day-to-day basis, and the construction industry is no different.

Recent years have seen the utilisation of virtual reality technology, previously only associated with the gaming world, to enhance the design, safety and training elements of construction.

VR in the construction industry

For active construction sites, virtual reality is supporting managers in gaining clear views of designs and construction sites prior to the project commencing, allowing them to more effectively plan and problem solve at the earliest point, ultimately allowing for a much more productive and timely project.

VR can also play a vital role for those considering a career in scaffolding, as it allows them to see what it’s like to work at height, determine if this is a career path they wish to progress and encourage new learners into the industry.

For the team at SIMIAN, VR is something we have been utilising for quite some time. With delegates visiting our centres gaining real insight into the world of scaffolding and what working on site truly feels like. This is made possible using CONVERT technology.

What is CONVERT?

Construction Virtual Environment Resource Training (CONVERT) is a national project ultimately funded by the Construction Industry Training Board, and delivered by CWIC (Construction Wales Innovation Centre). It allows users to take part in immersive learning experiences through the use of virtual and augmented reality, these experiences mimic real-life construction scenarios.

The software aims to:

  • Increase the construction industry’s appeal to prospective learners
  • Provide an engaging way of learning about construction safety
  • Increase the accessibility of training
  • Give employers a cost-effective and scalable solution to training
