CITB Health, Safety and Environment CSCS Touchscreen Tests

21st March 2024

Passing your CITB Health, Safety and Environment touch screen test is a prerequisite for obtaining a CSCS card, which is often necessary for accessing and working on most construction sites in the UK. It is also an important way for construction workers to show they can work safely.

Whether you need to renew your CSCS card or acquire a new one, our centres facilitate CITB test bookings. Book your CITB touch screen test at SIMIAN Warrington and LASC centre, available Monday to Friday from 10 am – 3.30 pm.

The most frequently taken CITB Health, Safety & Environment test is the General Operatives test, also known as the CITB touch screen test. It covers various common trades such as General Labourers, Site Operatives, Bricklayers, Joiners, Carpenters, Painters & Decorators, Plasterers, Ground-workers, and more. This test is suitable for the most popular CSCS cards like the CSCS Green Card, Red Trainee Card, Blue Card, Gold Card, White Card, and Yellow Card.

If you fall into a specialist category, you may need to take a different test. Here are some options:

  • Manager or Professional = Managers & Professionals Test
  • Supervisor = Supervisor Test
  • Scaffolder/Roofer = Working at Height Test

About the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HS&E) Test for General Operatives:

The General Operatives HS&E test ensures that workers possess a fundamental level of awareness regarding health, safety, and environmental considerations before commencing work on-site. It evaluates knowledge in five primary areas:

  1. Working environment
  2. Occupational health
  3. Safety
  4. High-risk activities
  5. Specialist knowledge

To pass the Operatives test, candidates must achieve a score of at least 90%. This entails answering a minimum of 45 out of 50 questions correctly.

Comprehensive preparation material is available in the official CITB GT100 publication, which includes questionnaires and answers relevant to the test. Additionally, digital downloads of this material are accessible. A smartphone application offers test simulations, enabling candidates to practice answering questions within a time limit and identify areas requiring further study. The Operatives app is accessible in 14 voiceover languages.

About the HS&E Specialist Tests:

These tests incorporate questions from the core knowledge areas featured in the Operatives test, along with specialized questions related to chosen areas. Specialist tests are available in various topics, including supervisory roles, demolition, plumbing, highway works, specialist work at height, lifts and escalators, tunnelling, HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) services, pipefitting and welding, ductwork, refrigeration, air conditioning, and services and facilities maintenance.

Similar to the Operatives test, the pass mark for each Specialist test is set at 90%, requiring candidates to answer a minimum of 45 out of 50 questions correctly. Preparation material, including the CITB GT100 publication and digital downloads, as well as the smartphone application for test simulations, are available.

About the Managers and Professionals Test:

The Managers and Professionals test underwent an update in June 2023 to reflect changes in legislation, working practices, and emerging technologies.

Managers and professionals within the construction industry bear the responsibility of adhering to, embedding, and implementing effective HS&E practices, ultimately contributing to the reduction of fatalities and accidents. The test assesses knowledge in six core areas:

  1. Legal and management
  2. Occupational health, wellbeing, and welfare
  3. General safety
  4. High-risk activities
  5. Environmental considerations
  6. Specialized activities

Specialized activities include questions on demolition and highway works. Additionally, based on industry feedback, certain topics have been augmented within the existing core areas, such as mental health, leadership, occupational health governance, behavioural safety, new technologies, and enhancing legislative compliance.

Similar to other tests, the pass mark for the Managers and Professionals test is set at 90%, requiring candidates to answer a minimum of 45 out of 50 questions correctly.

If you’re unsure about which test or card suits you best, it’s advisable to consult your site supervisor or employer for clarification.
