From School Leaver to Apprentice: How Charlie is Earning and Learning with SIMIAN

At just 16, Charlie is embarking on an exciting new journey, having started his waterproof membrane installer apprenticeship with SIMIAN, working at BBR Roofing. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who recently completed the same apprenticeship, Charlie is not only continuing a family tradition but also laying the foundation for his own career in construction.

Charlie’s decision to join BBR Roofing was heavily influenced by his brother’s success in the same field. His brother, now a qualified waterproof membrane installer, inspired Charlie by showing him the value of learning a trade and the opportunities it can bring.

“My brother’s done well for himself, and I wanted to do the same,” Charlie shares. “It’s good to know I can learn a trade, earn money, and set myself up with a career just like he has.”

After completing his GCSEs, Charlie began working as a labourer at BBR Roofing. He quickly realised that traditional academic paths weren’t for him. He’s found the apprenticeship path perfect for him, as it offers the hands-on experience he enjoys while still allowing him to earn a wage.

“I’m not the most academic person,” he explains. “Sitting in a classroom never worked for me. I learn better with my hands – I need to be doing something practical. That’s why I knew an apprenticeship was the right choice.”

Now beginning his apprenticeship, Charlie is learning crucial skills, from surface preparation to applying waterproof membranes, all while understanding the importance of safety on-site.

One of the key aspects Charlie has enjoyed so far is developing his teamwork skills:

“I would recommend an apprenticeship for school leavers,” Charlie says “It’s a great way to continue learning whilst making a start on your career choice. SIMIAN is a really good training centre – they care about each learner, and I’ve gained great teamwork skills already.”

Charlie is just at the start of his journey, but with the expert guidance of SIMIAN and the support of BBR Roofing, he’s already on track for a successful and rewarding career. His passion for practical learning, combined with his natural work ethic, is setting him up to become a skilled, certified roofer.
