From Apprentice to Mentor — Jason’s Journey with Lee Marley and SIMIAN

Jason’s journey from a furloughed retail worker during lockdown to a highly knowledgeable Part 2 Scaffolder and now mentor exemplifies the real-world impact of a structured, supportive apprenticeship programme.

At SIMIAN, we believe in developing people, not just skillsets. Our partnerships with organisations like Lee Marley are built on shared values of quality, safety, and growth. Jason’s journey from a furloughed retail worker during lockdown to a highly knowledgeable Part 2 Scaffolder and now mentor exemplifies the real-world impact of a structured, supportive apprenticeship programme.

Jason’s scaffolding career began at a time of uncertainty. With his retail role disrupted by the pandemic, he was determined to find something more hands-on, something outdoors. He discovered scaffolding through Lee Marley and joined the SIMIAN London Academy of Sustainable Construction (LASC). Today, he leads his own gang, is entrusted with planning and erecting scaffolding solutions, and plays a vital role in mentoring new apprentices.

What inspired you to undertake a scaffolding apprenticeship

During lockdown I wanted to keep working. I was furloughed from retail and didn’t want to sit around all day, so I applied for outdoor labouring jobs. I came across the Lee Marley apprenticeship and applied. As part of the interview, they took us up about 20 levels of scaffolding—to test if we could handle the physical and mental demands. It was a challenge, but I knew this was the direction I wanted to go in.

Looking back on your apprenticeship with Lee Marley, what were some of the key lessons that helped shape your journey to becoming fully qualified?

My first supervisor Jim made a massive influence—he threw me in at the deep end with the hardest workers and let me get involved with everything, from day one. I wasn’t treated any differently because I was an apprentice. Later, I worked under Ashley Wakefield, who’s been really encouraging, and we’ve worked really well together. That hands-on support made a big difference.

Now that you’re mentoring a new apprentice, how does it feel to be on the other side of the process — and what do you aim to pass on from your own experience?

Coming from a totally different world, I didn’t know what to expect. But the way I was treated and taught really stuck with me. Now I’m trying to do the same encouraging my apprentice, sharing what I’ve learned, and passing on the little tricks of the trade that make a big difference on site.

What have been some of your proudest moments since qualifying, and how do they reflect the standards set by Lee Marley and the wider industry?

Becoming a gang leader was a huge moment. I’ve been trusted to erect my own work, which means the jobs I do now rely on my knowledge and decisions. That’s a big responsibility, and I’m proud of that trust. The technical side—like load weights and safety guidelines—is more complex than I expected, but I’ve taken it in my stride.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their apprenticeship journey, especially those who may be unsure about what to expect?

Stick it out! Whether it’s the weather, the people, or the pay—it’s all part of the journey. Things get better the longer you’re in it, and it really does pay off.

In your opinion, what makes the Lee Marley apprenticeship programme stand out — and why would you recommend it to others considering a career in the industry?

The mentoring from the leadership team is top class. The pay is generous, the people are solid, and any time I’ve had a problem, the training team is there straight away—they always pick up the phone. That kind of support makes all the difference.

A Word from Ashley Wakefield, Lee Marley Scaffolding Supervisor:

“Jason’s growth from apprentice to gang leader is a perfect example of what our training programme is all about—developing skilled, confident scaffolders who lead by example. We’re proud to see him mentoring the next generation.”

A Word from Sara Calvo, SIMIAN LASC Business Development Manager:

“Jason’s story is one of drive, resilience, and real achievement. It’s a testament to the impact of high-quality training and positive mentorship between SIMIAN and apprentice employers. He embodies the standards we aim to set across the industry.”

From walking 20 levels on day one to leading his own team, Jason’s journey is proof that with the right mindset and the right support, anything is possible. At SIMIAN, we’re committed to empowering more apprentices like Jason—because when people grow, the industry moves forward.
