Following in Their Father’s Footsteps: The Kemp Brothers’ Journey in Scaffolding

From a young age, Bailey and Thomas were drawn to the world of scaffolding. Their passion was sparked by visits to the yard with their dad when he first started out in the trade.

For brothers Bailey and Thomas Kemp, scaffolding isn’t just a career choice—it’s in their blood. At just 23 and 19 years old, the duo are making their mark as apprentices at GKR Scaffolding, proudly following in the footsteps of their father, an advanced scaffolder for the same company.

From a young age, Bailey and Thomas were drawn to the world of scaffolding. Their passion was sparked by visits to the yard with their dad when he first started out in the trade. Watching him work, listening to stories of challenging projects, and witnessing the camaraderie of the scaffolding team made a lasting impression on them. It was never a question of ‘if’ they would join the industry—only ‘when.’

Bailey reflects on their journey, saying, “Scaffolding was always the job for us. We grew up around it, and now we’re lucky enough to study at SIMIAN LASC while working at GKR. It’s the best of both worlds—learning in college and then applying that knowledge on site.”

Their apprenticeship provides them with hands-on experience across multiple job sites, allowing them to refine their skills in real-world conditions. From erecting birdcages to assembling complex structures, they are gaining invaluable expertise that will set them up for a long and successful career in scaffolding.

Thomas adds, “Health and safety awareness has been an important part of our learning at the centre, and then taking this knowledge on site has been crucial. I enjoy my apprenticeship because you are constantly learning and evolving in the industry.”

Bailey also recommends the apprenticeship route, saying, “I would recommend a scaffolding apprenticeship. I think the support and progression you get for the two years is invaluable. If you are on your end of Part 1B, there are a few instructors at the college who will help.”

At GKR Scaffolding, apprenticeships aren’t just about learning the technical side of the trade. They also instil discipline, teamwork, and a commitment to safety—essential qualities in such a high-risk profession. The Kemp brothers are thriving in this environment, taking pride in every scaffold they erect and every new skill they master.

With their father as both a mentor and an inspiration, Bailey and Thomas are on track to become the next generation of top scaffolding professionals. Their story is a testament to the power of family, hard work, and dedication to the craft.

As they continue their journey, one thing is certain: the future of scaffolding is in good hands with the Kemp brothers leading the way. To find out more about SIMIAN apprenticeships, click here.
