Daisy’s Story in a Male-Dominated Industry
At just 18 years old, Daisy is already proving that traditional career paths aren’t for everyone – and that sometimes, the right path is the one you never saw coming.

At just 18 years old, Daisy is already proving that traditional career paths aren’t for everyone – and that sometimes, the right path is the one you never saw coming.
Currently undertaking a scaffolding apprenticeship with KAEFER and training through SIMIAN LASC (London Academy of Sustainable Construction), Daisy is smashing stereotypes and building a strong future for herself in a trade she once thought was out of reach.
Daisy’s journey didn’t begin on a construction site. Like many young people, she followed the college route straight from school, enrolling in a Travel and Tourism course. But it wasn’t long before she realised it wasn’t the right fit. “It just wasn’t me,” she admits. “I wanted to be doing something more active, hands-on, and challenging.”
That’s when her dad stepped in.
A scaffolder himself with KAEFER, Daisy’s dad had long seen her potential and suggested giving an apprenticeship a try. At first, Daisy wasn’t sure. “I thought the work my dad did was above what I was capable of – especially as a young girl. It just seemed so physical and intense. I wasn’t sure if I could cut it.”
But when she looked closer at the life scaffolding had provided her dad — the financial stability, the variety of work, the long-term opportunities — she realised it might be more achievable than she’d first thought.
From the moment she started her apprenticeship, Daisy hasn’t looked back. “I’ve genuinely enjoyed every second,” she says. “It’s been exciting, different, and exactly what I needed.”
With support from both KAEFER and SIMIAN, Daisy is gaining the full experience — learning the practical skills she needs on-site, while also developing a strong understanding of the theory behind the work. “SIMIAN has been amazing,” she says. “They’re helping me learn not just how to do the job, but why things are done the way they are — and the many opportunities this industry can open up for you.”
One of Daisy’s proudest moments so far has been achieving her CISRS Part One card — a huge accomplishment for anyone, but especially impressive for an 18-year-old just starting out. “That was a big moment for me,” she says proudly. “It’s something I never imagined I’d be able to do, and now I’m already looking ahead to my CISRS Part Two.”
Like many women entering a traditionally male-dominated industry, Daisy expected some challenges — and she’s faced a few. “Some of the younger lads have looked at me like I’m below them,” she says. “I expected it, but that doesn’t make it easy.”
However, she’s quick to point out the incredible support she’s received from her older team leaders and experienced colleagues. “They’ve been brilliant. They’re always reminding me that I’m just as good — if not better — than some of the young men. That kind of encouragement keeps me going.”
Daisy’s already hit some major milestones — including transferring to a National Grid gas plant site, where she was welcomed as part of the team, and earning Apprentice of the Month at KAEFER. “For the first time in my life, I feel like I can truly be myself and be accepted for who I am. That’s powerful.”
Looking ahead, Daisy knows she’s just getting started. “This isn’t just a job — it’s the start of a lifelong career that’s only looking up for me.”
Her advice to other young girls considering a male-dominated industry? She doesn’t hesitate:
“If you want a career and you’re willing to work hard for it — go for it! It’s not a pretty job, but for me it’s exciting and fun, and it’s giving me a future I’m proud of. You’ve got to believe in yourself and never let anyone put you down.”
At SIMIAN, we’re passionate about empowering the next generation of scaffolders — and Daisy’s story is a perfect example of what can happen when confidence, curiosity, and a little encouragement come together.
To Daisy, and to all the young women considering a future in scaffolding: there’s a place for you here. And it’s not just about breaking barriers — it’s about building your future, your way.
