SIMIAN Waterproof Membrane Apprentices Get Behind the Scenes at IKO

At SIMIAN, we’re committed to ensuring our apprentices not only gain hands-on skills but also a deeper understanding of the products and systems they’ll encounter in the field. As part of this mission, our Waterproof Membrane apprentices recently had the invaluable opportunity to visit IKO, one of our key product partners, to see first-hand how high-quality roofing materials are developed and manufactured. From the raw materials to the final product, the visit opened eyes and sparked conversation.

The visit for our Waterproof Membrane Apprentices was packed with insight and inspiration. Apprentices were given an in-depth factory tour, hosted by Amy Earlam, IKO’s Quality Control and Research & Development Manager, who expertly walked the group through each stage of the production process. From raw materials to final product, apprentices saw just how much technology and precision goes into making the products they rely on.

Following the tour, the group headed over to IKO’s state-of-the-art Training Academy, where Thomas Simpson, Technical Engineer, delivered a detailed technical presentation. Apprentices were shown the full range of IKO products and how to apply them effectively and compliantly on site, reinforcing the importance of both product knowledge and practical technique.

Our apprentices were thoroughly impressed, and their feedback speaks for itself:

Scott Finney shared: “It was something new to be seen, I have never seen anything like this before. It uses a lot more technology than you think. The process was a lot longer. It’s absolutely mad! It’s mint – I am so grateful to IKO for allowing us to see this process. It will definitely make me use IKO on site.”

Dylan Hansen added: “I enjoyed learning more about it, as I mainly use IKO on site, so it’s good to know how it’s made and everything. I feel like I know a lot more about how to do it correctly onsite.”
