Simian new Curriculum Area Manager

Could you please tell us about your past work experience?

I am a qualified Maintenance Technician, I worked at Delta Metals for 29 years, as a shift team leader, also responsible for 12 apprentices per 4-year cycle within the business.

I have worked in adult, apprenticeships, and youth education for 35 years, in company, FE Colleges and private training providers.

Can you describe a typical day at Simian?

I am based at LASC in Waltham Forest 3 days per week, engaging with the local council, local schools, and Waltham Forest college.

As part of the Funded Learning Team, we are supporting the curriculum delivery and quality assurance of our apprenticeships and commercial study programmes, and I am also developing level 2 and 3 apprenticeship curriculums and funded learning opportunities for SIMIAN.

Is there one aspect of your work in particular that you most enjoy?

Supporting staff and learners in achieving their objectives, if you can change something to assist them you have achieved something yourself.

What advice would you give those considering a career in the construction industry?

There are so many opportunities in Construction, both through the trades and technical routes, it is so rewarding to make something that lasts.

In your opinion, what is the most important piece of guidance you give youngsters making their way in the industry?

Work hard in your studies, listen to and respect the people who can help you at work and in your training, we are all here to support you.

Before working at Simian, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Away from work,  I am involved with Bilston Swimming Club as the Club President.

I used to operate a learn to swim school 3 times a week at the club, with 10 staff, 120 pupils from 4 to 13 years old. I have taught approximately 1,500 children to swim, and I have coached competitive swimming for 20 years up to national level.

What would be your dream job?

Playing cricket for a living.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The Caribbean

Favourite film?

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)

Favourite food?

Fish and Chips

Have you ever had your 15 minutes of fame?

I met the Duke of Edinburgh at a D of E awards ceremony; I have also liaised with various Government ministers & MPs on apprenticeship initiatives.

Pub or wine bar?

Definitely the pub! I like beer and sampling whiskies.

Secret talent?

I have no secret talents, sadly, I can’t sing or dance.
